2017 PSLE English Continuous Writing Composition -A special gift

“Happy Birthday!” my classmates cheered as I walked into the classroom. Although I was excited about celebrating my birthday, I had no idea that I was about to receive one of the most meaningful gifts of my life.

During recess, my best friend, Ryan, approached me with a beautifully wrapped box. A bright ribbon was tied neatly around it. With curiosity bubbling inside me, I carefully untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. Inside was a white mug with the words “Best Friends” printed boldly on it. At first glance, it seemed like an ordinary mug, but as I examined it more closely, I realised how much thought had gone into it.

On the other side of the mug was a picture of two football jerseys, each with the number “1”. Ryan explained that the jerseys represented our shared dream of becoming the best players on our school football team. Tucked inside the mug was a handwritten note thanking me for encouraging him whenever he felt discouraged and for standing by him through difficult times.

A warm feeling spread through me as I read his heartfelt message. Memories of our friendship flashed through my mind. We had spent countless afternoons practising football, studying for examinations and supporting each other through challenges. The mug was not merely a gift; it was a symbol of our friendship and the precious memories we had created together.

That evening, I placed the mug on my study table. Every time I look at it, I am reminded of the importance of friendship, loyalty and gratitude. Although many years may pass, I know that this special gift will always hold a place in my heart.

From that experience, I learnt that the most valuable gifts are not necessarily the most expensive ones. Instead, they are the gifts that come from the heart and carry meaningful memories that last a lifetime.
