“What’s this?” I asked, waving an envelope I had found on the dining table.
“Open it,” replied my mother with a smile.
I eagerly opened it, wondering what it could contain. I was a little puzzled when I realised it was an invitation card. Who could it be from? I opened the card and read the contents. It was from my aunt and uncle, inviting us to their newborn’s first-month celebration the following week. My aunt had given birth to a baby girl, the newest addition to our family, a few weeks ago. I knew my aunt was very happy as she had always wanted a daughter. After checking with my parents regarding their schedules, I sent a message to my aunt, confirming our attendance. I could not wait to see my baby cousin and counted down the days excitedly.
Finally, it was the day of the celebration. I wore a new dress, as it felt it was a special occasion. Upon arriving at my aunt’s house, we were greeted by raucous laughter and loud chatter, indicating that most of my family members had arrived. The house was gaily decorated with colourful balloons and streamers. On one wall were the words “Claudine’s 1st Month Celebration”. There were also many photographs of my baby cousin decorated on the wall. The table was laden with cute cupcakes and colourful cookies, as well as an array of mouthwatering dishes. I went to find my aunt, who was carrying her baby daughter in her arms. She looked a little tired but still had a radiant smile on her face as she greeted me warmly. I waved to my baby cousin, who looked around in surprise, not used to the attention she was receiving.
My uncle invited us to help ourselves to the food and offered us some drinks. I got myself a cup of orange juice and a plate of food. The food looked so good as it looked and I helped myself until I could not eat another bite. Feeling bored, I looked around for my aunt and asked if I could help carry my baby cousin.
Seeing she was a little hesitant but had no reservations that I was able to do this, she positioned her daughter in my arms. My baby cousin smiled upon seeing my wavy blonde hair. I felt that her drool was all over my clothes. I giggled as my cousin coughed and before I knew it, she had thrown up all over me!
It was momentarily stunned, not knowing how to react. My aunt and other family members all burst into laughter when they saw what had happened, as well as my precious frock. My aunt took the baby away from me and, apologising for the mess she made, offered a towel to clean up.
I cleaned myself up as best as I could and found that there was still a stain on my new dress. My mother tried to comfort me and said that the would dry her best to clean the dress when we got home. After some time chatting and catching up with my other cousins, it was time to leave. In my opinion, it had been an enjoyable celebration. One mishap which happened to my dress only served to make it more memorable!
