“Dear diary, I hope that I will win the singing competition tomorrow, because Mummy promised to take me to watch the Lion King musical if I win.”
I closed my journal and went to bed but I could not fall asleep. I tossed and turned until it was past midnight. I felt anxious about the competition, because the other nine participants who progressed to the final round were all very good singers.
The next morning, Daddy and Mummy took me to the concert hall. Mummy gave me a hug before I was ushered to a waiting room for the participants. To my surprise, I was the earliest. I looked at my watch. It was ten minutes past ten. The competition would start at half past ten.
I took a sip of chrysanthemum tea that Mum had specially brewed for me last night. Then, I cleared my throat and was about to practise my piece, titled “The Rainbow Connection”, when the door swung open. Two other participants entered the room. I wondered if they, like me, were a bundle of nerves. After what seemed like an eternity, it was my turn.
Despite the cool temperature from the air-conditioning, a cold sweat broke out on my forehead when I stood on the stage. My eyes swept across the audience, which comprised family and friends of the participants, but I could not locate Daddy and Mummy. The five judges in the panel were dressed formally in blazers and dress pants. They smiled at me and told me not to be nervous. I took a deep breath and started to sing. The more I sang, the more at ease I felt. My arms gestured as I poured my emotions into singing the chorus.
After the last participant had sung, I sat between Daddy and Mummy in the audience to wait for the results. Mummy must have been as jittery as I was. Her hands were cold and clammy. The Chief Judge switched on the microphone and announced, “All of you sang very well, and we are pleased to crown Miss Chloe See as the winner!”
