As the car turned the corner, the scenic view of the sea unfolded before their eyes. Justin closed his eyes in content as the cooling sea breeze blew in his face. The corner of his lips lifted as he thought of the exciting day ahead. It had been a long time since they went to the beach. His family was also in high spirits, chattering in the car as they made their way to their destination.
The weather was perfect when they stepped out of the car. The clear blue sky was a welcome sight which lifted their mood even more. Although they had been to the beach several times before, it was their first time having a picnic on the beach. The aroma of food wafted in the air as soon as Justin’s parents retrieved their picnic basket from the trunk of the car. Justin carried the picnic mat, his eyes scanning the area for an ideal spot to settle down. “There!” Justin pointed to a shady spot under a tree. After setting down, Justin started taking out various food and beverages from the basket.
“I’ve got bread and other food items here, so try making your own sandwich! It’ll be a fun activity!” Justin’s mother told him.
“I’m going to make the best sandwich!” Justin exclaimed.
“Really? I doubt you can beat me!” his sister, Jenna, jokingly responded.
Looking at the assortment of vegetables, meats and sauces available, Justin was lost. He did not know where to start as it was his first time making a sandwich all by himself. Nonetheless, he was still excited to try something new. He took a slice of bread and chose all his favourite ingredients, which were cheese, bacon and egg.
“Remember to eat your greens, Justin!” his mother reminded him cheerily. Even though Justin did not like vegetables, he decided to give it a try. He added a piece of lettuce to his sandwich.
The first bite of his sandwich was heavenly. Justin loved the taste of his sandwich. Adding a piece of lettuce to the sandwich was a good choice, he thought. Seeing everyone enjoy their meal, Justin’s mother smiled in contentment.
Filling their tummies with delicious self-made sandwiches was a great start to the family picnic. Later on, Justin and his sister had fun building sandcastles and collecting shells together. Their parents rested on the picnic mat, glad to enjoy a peaceful afternoon where they could simply relax without having anything on their minds.
Soon, it was time to head home. After helping their parents pack up, Justin and his sister bade goodbye to their sandcastles and the beach. As the car drove off, Justin leaned against the window, admiring the view of the orange sunset and the glistening sea. What a perfect day, he thought. On his first picnic to the beach, he got to make his very own sandwich for the first time. He was also glad that he added lettuce into his sandwich because it gave it a nice crunchy texture. Trying something new was not bad at all!
