Being thankful does not always come from big surprises or expensive gifts. Sometimes, simple moments in our daily lives remind us to appreciate what we have. I experienced such a moment on the MRT train last month.

It was after a tiring day at school and I was glad when I managed to find a seat. As the train started moving, I noticed the priority-seat sign above me. It showed a person in a wheelchair, a woman carrying a baby, a pregnant woman and an elderly person with a walking stick. I knew the seats were meant for people who needed extra help, but since the train was still quite empty, I remained seated.

After a few stops, more passengers boarded. Among them were a pregnant woman and a man in a wheelchair. The man struggled slightly as he tried to position his wheelchair and the woman held her belly while looking around for a place to sit. Seeing this, I immediately stood up and offered my seat to the pregnant woman. Another passenger offered space for the man in the wheelchair.

The pregnant woman smiled warmly at me and said,

“Thank you so much.” Her voice was gentle but filled with relief. At the same time, the man in the wheelchair thanked the other passenger, nodding gratefully. Watching them express their thankfulness made me feel happy.

As I stood for the rest of the ride, I realised that I, too, was thankful—thankful that I was strong enough to stand, thankful that I had learnt to care for others and thankful that such small actions could brighten someone’s day.

That simple train ride taught me that kindness does not need to be grand. Even giving up a seat can make a big difference.
