280 People Buried By Collapsed Cliff

One late Friday afternoon, a storm was raging over a small town in a remote mountainous area. Torrential rains lashed the town and sent the inhabitants scurrying to their homes. Strong winds blew and brought destruction to the town as roofs of thatched huts were blown off, and frees were uprooted and fell across streets. Telephone poles were ripped off and communication with the outside world was cut off. With most inhabitants being kept indoors by the storm, very few knew the severity of the storm. Then, something dreadful happened. A cliff which was bare of vegetation collapsed during torrential rains. Disaster struck a residential compound. The compound housed families of workers from a nearby.coalmine, a cement factory and a grain storage unit.

The residents did not sense anything amiss as they thought it was just a typica! Storm that was prevalent in the area. They were horrified as rocks and mud rained on their houses and themselves. Screams and cries echoed through the town as about 280 people lay buried under tonnes of rocks and mud. As the alarm was sounded, other residents rushed and dug frantically to save the victims. Fourteen bodies were recovered. There were no survivors.
