A Alighting Passenger Must Press The Bell In Advance

An elderly passenger, Mrs. Yap, was travelling in a bus one evening. The bus was plying between Queenstown and Ang Mo Kio. At that time it was passing along busy Orchard Road. Shoppers and tourists thronged this popular shopping belt. Brightly-lit shops and fast food restaurants lined the road. The sight was fascinating. She was seated by a window and the bus was quite packed with commuters. Traffic was moving at a snail's pace. She was so engrossed in the picturesque sight that she forgot to alight at the bus stop in front of Lucky Plaza.

The next moment the bus was seen speeding along the last stretch of Orchard Road as the heavy traffic eased. The sight changed as it went along Selegie Road. Drab old shophouses lined the route, a sharp contrast to the neon-lit shops of Orchard Road. Suddenly, a thought stuck her. She sensed something amiss. She had forgotten to alight at Lucky Plaza. She rose and shouted at the driver to stop at once.The bus came screeching to a stop. The driver was taken aback. “I want to get off here! Open the door!” she shouted angrily.

“I’m sorry. I’ll be breaking a traffic rule if I let you off here,” the driver replied. Soon they had a heated quarrel. A kind man, Mr. Lee,intervened, “The driver is right. You are wrong. An alighting passenger should press the bell in advance to indicate his or her intention to alight.You could have risked your life if you have alighted.”

At this juncture, Mrs. Yap apologised to the driver for her rash action
