A Beggar

I lived with my grandparents when I was ten years old. Every morning, I walked with my sister to a school which was quite far from our house. Usually on our way home, we would see a man sitting under a bushy tree. He was thin, short and dressed in rags. Almost everyday, he begged for money from passers-by with a broken bowl. I always wondered why he begged instead of working for a living. Then, my father told me that he was blind and crippled.

One day, out of my curiosity, I decided to approach him It was the first time I came face to face with him. I found that he was so skinny that I could hardly see any flesh except bones. He raised his head and stared at me blankly. He was wondering what I was going to do to him.

“Uncie, when and how did you become blind and crippled?” After hearing my questions, he burst into laughter. Then, he told me that he came from a rich family. At home, he was treated like a prince. His parents never turned down whatever he wanted. He owned a luxurious car and had a lot of money to spend. Soon, he gave up his studies and was addicted to drugs. One night, he was speeding in his sports car while he was drunk. His car collided with a lorry. He was flung far away to the other side of the road. He was lying unconsciously in a pool of blood. When he woke up, he realized that he had become blind and one of his legs was cut off.

After the accident, another big blow on his family was that his father was arrested for drug trafficking. About a few weeks later, his mother passed away because of a severe heart attack.

Without saying any words, I stood up and walked away. My head was fuzzy. I really did not know what to say.
