A Boy Who Fell From An Escalator

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. The time was nearly two p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Ling and their eight-year-old son, David, were shopping in a popular shopping centre in town. They passed many shops selling textile, handbags, shoes, watches and kitchen utensils. They mingled with a large crowd of tourists and holiday-makers. Business was brisk. Salesgirls had a hectic time as cash and goods exchanged hands.

At this juncture, something attracted David’s attention. The neon light on the upper floor fascinated him. He broke loose from his father’s grip and rushed to the escalator. His father was taken aback and called him to slow down. But before anybody could catch him, David was already on the way up the escalator. His parents were apprehensive as David was a mischievous lad. They quickly boarded the escalator in their frantic effort to look after his well-being. His parents gasped and turned white when they saw David trying to climb over the railings and ride up the rubber hand rail. Moments later, he fell over. He fell two floors from an escalator and landed on the ground with a thud. His parents screamed and were hysterical.

David suffered head injuries and a fractured arm and lost consciousness soon after. He was rushed to hospital where he was put in the intensive care unit. He had been unconscious since the fall. His condition was critical.
