A Boy’s Bad Social Habit

One windy afternoon, a little boy, Peter, was in his luxurious house. After he had eaten a sweet, he threw the wrapper on the floor. Minutes later, he discarded a rambutan seed, much to the indignation of his uncle, Mr. Lin. His uncle had, earlier, spotted his bad social habit of throwing litter around the house. Mr. Lin spoke to Peter angrily, “What is the matter with you? Littering the house with wrapper and a rambutan seed? You must be out of your mind!” Peter stared at his uncle in defiance, “I like to litter the floor and no one can stop me, not even my parents! Besides, our maid, Jane, can take care of the litter!” His uncle was taken aback by his outburst and flew into a rage. Moments later, he slapped Peter, sending him screaming for his doting parents and dashing into his bedroom in disgust. He soon cried loudly and started to throw tantrums. He flung a cup at the dressing table, wrecking the mirror. Broken glasses came crashing to the floor. The deafening noise sent his uncle hurrying into the room to investigate. Peter was in the midst of throwing the vase to the floor when his uncle came in. His uncle took cover as the vase was smashed to pieces.

At this juncture, Mr. Lin intervened and stopped him from destroying his piggybank and table-lamp. He thrashed Peter with a long cane, sending him kneeling down and begging for mercy, “Uncle, don’t beat me anymore. I know I was wrong. Give me a chance to change into a new leaf. I vow that I’ll not litter the house again. It’s a bad social habit. Besides, rubbish breeds diseases. The place becomes an eyesore.” Mr. Lin forgave him because he repented for his wrongdoing.
