PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPOSITIONS (UPPER PRIMARY)

Laila and Reena were cousins studying in the same school. While Laila was the prettier and more popular of the two, Reena was the quieter and simpler one. There was one quality though which they both shared. They were strong swimmers. During inter-school swimming matches; Laila and Reena always won some medal for their school.
But that was where the similarity ended. Laila was a very vain girl who was extremely proud of her beauty. She looked down upon Reena. Reena was well aware of this and as a result felt miserable.
Though Reena tried her best to avoid Laila, she could not because both their mothers were good friends and so always went for outings together, taking along their respective daughters with them.
One day, much to Reena’s dismay, she had to go on one such outing to a popular picnic area with Laila and her mother. While their mothers unpacked their picnic basket, the two girls with great reluctance walked off together. Before long, both were standing on a bridge watching the water rush underneath them. Suddenly, out of the blue, they heard a woman’s shriek followed by a plea to rescue her son from drowning. Reena and Laila turned towards the direction of the shriek and saw to their horror a little boy struggling in the water.
“Quick, let’s rescue him!” cried Reena urgently as she removed her sports shoes.
“It’s too dangerous! The current is too swift!” said Laila frightened.
Ignoring her, Reena jumped into the flowing river. She swam as fast as she could towards the litle boy who was now blue in the face, grabbed him by the collar and started swimming towards the river bank. Reena struggled desperately to swim against the current for it was very strong. After what seemed like ages, she managed to reach the bank. The boy’s mother helped drag both Reena and the boy to safety.
“Thank you so much!” sobbed the mother gratefully as she hugged her son.
The following day in school, news spread rapidly about Reena’s bravery. Word also spread that Laila had been too scared to help the drowning boy despite being a good swimmer. The principal commended Reena on her brave act.
Reena soon found herself at the top of the popularity list while Laila was avoided by many of her own friends. Laila learnt a bitter lesson that a pretty face was not everything but good character was.
