A Broken Wing

“Cheep! Cheep! Cheep!” It was a the sound of a bird in distress. I was walking upon a bridge underneath which a stream flowed. I stopped to look. There was a small movement among some bushes.

It was indeed a bird, and it was the kind I had been trying to catch for days. A blue kingfisher. I was startled. The bird was trying hard to fly. However, it was hurt. It had a broken wing.

I carried it gently and brought it home. My mother was surprised. She quickly got a basket, some warm water and dry cloth. Together, we cleaned the kingfisher’s wound and applied a little ointment to it.

For three days, the bird sat in its basket. It did not move very much. At the end of three days however, it called aloud and flapped its wings, ready to go. I brought it to an open window The bird flew out. In a spectacular flash of blue, it disappeared into the jungle nearby.
