A Campfire

During the March holidays, my Scouts Company decided to have a campfire. The purpose of the campfire was for us to get to know other scouts and brownies from the neighbouring primary schools. We were all very excited and we actually started to prepare for the event about one month before the big day.

The first thing we did was to send out invitations to all the Scouts and Brownies packs in all the neighbouring primary schools. We sent out about ten invitations. We were expecting about one hundred guests. In the meantime, we also started preparing for the campfire. The different patrols were given tasks to do. My patrol was in-charge of gathering wood for the campfire. The other patrols took charge of food and drinks, games, music and entertainment.

Soon, the day of the campfire drew nearer and nearer.Our Scout master, Mr Tan discovered that we did not have enough wood, so we had to buy some firewood a few days before the campfire. The campfire was to be held in our school, at the carpark. It was scheduled to start at 7.00 p.m.

On the day of the campfire, which was a Saturday, we went to school as early as one in the afternoon to decorate the place. We used leaves, twigs and colourful streamers.The guests started arriving at 6.30 p.m. By 7.00 p.m., most of the guests had arrived. It was very noisy and everyone was very excited. A few minutes later, our guest-of-honour,Our Principal arrived. He declared the campfire open and lit up the pile of wood. Everybody cheered loudly and broke into the song –“Campfire Burning”.

We spent the rest of the evening playing games and singing songs while admiring the fire. It was quite spectacular because the flames leapt quite high into the sky. It was a really pleasant night and there were quite a few stars twinkling in the sky. Those of us who were sitting in front near the fire were feeling very warm and perspiring profusely. The fire continued to burn for about half an hour and then it slowly turned into a slow, smouldering flame. After another fifteen minutes of more games, singing and dancing around the fire, we all filed into the school canteen to have refreshments. We were more thirsty than hungry but we finished most of the food anyway.

After refreshments, we mingled around and made friends with the scouts and brownies from the other schools. Soon we went back to the campfire which was dying off. We sang”Taps”, which is a dismissal song and a farewell song, “Auld Lang Syne”, and my Scout Master declared the campfire closed. Our guests made their way home and we stayed back to clean up the school. It was almost ten o’clock when we finally went home.

We really enjoyed ourselves as it was our very first campfire. Our Scoutmaster said that it was another Scout Company’s turn to hold a campfire next year, so we are all looking forward to being invited to it.
