A Careless Act

One windy morning, a washerwoman, Florence, was carrying two pails of clean water on the pavement. She intended to bring the water into the courtyard of her employer’s luxurious house. She needed the water to wash the soiled window curtains. Halfway, she was not careful. She spilled a lot of water, making the pavement wet and slippery. As she entered the courtyard, she began her time-consuming task in earnest. Washing soiled window curtains was painstaking and slow. She rolled up her sleeves and her pale arms were wet and soapy up to the elbows. Taking the chunk of blue laundry soap in her right hand, she scrubbed it over a soiled curtain.

All of a sudden, she heard a commotion outside the house. She peered through the locked gate and saw many boys falling on top of one another. They were roller-skating minutes earlier. They sustained serious facial and bodily injuries. Two of them were dazed and in a state of shock. The other four boys were groaning in pain on the ground. Their clothes were bloodstained and tattered. Florence left the house abruptly to investigate the matter.

On reaching the scene, she was horrified to know that a puddle of water had triggered off a series of falls among the roller-skating boys who came from the corner. She regretted that she was the culprit. Her careless act had injured many. She acted fast. She summoned an ambulance to take the injured victims to hospital.
