Robin sat in the bus, feeling proud of himself. He had just been given the task of sending a surprise gift to his Granny Amy at her place in West Gate Road. His mum had entrusted the task to him instead of to his elder sister as the latter was not strong enough to take long journeys. Besides, Robin was much stronger and could easily manage the beautifully wrapped food hamper.
At the beginning of the journey, Robin sat there, thinking of Granny Amy. He knew it was worth the effort and time as his Granny was fond of baking buns, cookies and cakes. She would never fail to have a variety of these in the pantry and would certainly serve him with some upon his arrival. Everyone back home knew how splendid Granny’s cookies were. To eat them with her home-brewed cappuccino was simply terrific. One cannot possibly get it anywhere else in town.
After some time, Robin began to feel drowsy. He had slept late the night before as a result of helping his parents to wrap the hamper. Soon he fell asleep and was oblivious to the bus moving towards the town. It was only when the bus made a sudden brake to avoid hitting a jaywalker that Robin awoke with a start. Where was he? He looked out of the window and was puzzled to see unfamiliar surroundings. Had he missed his stop?Even if he had, the route taken by this bus should not be passing by this strange place.
Turning to someone seated, beside him, Robin consulted a fellow passenger about where he was. The gentleman replied that the bus was service number sixteen and not sixty; that would take him to West Gate Road The two buses go by different routes after turning near
Prinsep Street.
Robin felt like an utter fool. His mother had reminded him of the bus number, and being confident of his way,he had not really registered the number in his head.He alighted at the next stop and crossed the street to catch any bus that went to the roundabout at Prinsep Street. What a troublesome way of travelling just because of his carelessness. Robin told himself that he would keep the embarrassment to himself, for fear that he might lose credibility for handling future responsibilities.
Fortunately, he did not wait long before the right bus came. He arrived at his grandmother’s house in good time and to his delight, was treated to an unforgettable, marvelously prepared array of cookies and two cups of cappuccino.
He was sure that the trip was worth the effort in spite of the embarrassing mistake.
