One early afternoon, a cashier, Nancy, was at work in a supermarket. She was day-dreaming. Through bleary eyes she looked at the customer. Being absent-minded, she put the money that the customer had paid into her handbag. It amounted to forty-eight dollars and twenty cents. There were two bills in all. As the day wore on, she became drowsy and could hardly lift her eyes. Queues of well-dressed customers were getting impatient. An irate elderly female customer, Joyce, yelled, “What is going on? Why is the service so slow? Is the cashier feeling unwell?” Another screamed, “Such service will put the supermarket to shame?” The commotion jolted Nancy from her drowsiness. She was startled to see so many customers staring angrily at her. A burly man in his thirties stood with his arms folded in front of her. He was fuming.

At this juncture, Nancy was embarrassed and bowed her head repeatedly to apologise for her slow service. Despite her apologies, some customers still showed signs of displeasure. A few boys booed at her, much to the amusement of other customers. As they passed her counter, she collected the money and greeted the respective customers, “Thanks for your patronage. Sorry for holding you up for so long.” When the queues were gone, she heaved a sign of relief.

In the late evening, it was time for her to count the day’s takings. She counted the takings laboriously. It was eight thousand, one dollar and fifty-six cents, mostly in coins. However, the bills amounted to eight thousand forty-nine dollars and seventy-six cents. The takings and the bill did not tally. There was a shortage of forty-eight dollars and twenty cents. She burst into tears as she feared to meet her supervisor in the office. She did not realise that she had unknowingly put the money into her handbag.
