A Courageous Act

It was a dull afternoon. Mr Rahman was driving his taxi along Treetop Road. He had just sent a passenger to the airport and was then on his way home. His wife had prepared his favourite fried noodles that day.

The road he was traveling on was quiet. Green fields spread out from both sides of the road. Mr Rahman yawned.

Suddenly, in the distance, he saw a small crowd of people.They appeared excited. Some were pointing towards something.Mr Rahman stopped his taxi as it reached the crowd. He rushed out to find that a van had plummeted into a huge pond at least fifty metres down from the main road. In the sinking van was a screaming lady. Without further thought, Mr Rahman dived into the pond. He struggled briefly in the cold water. Then, he grabbed the lady’s arm and pulling hard, managed to free her from the sinking vehicle. Seconds after, the van disappeared from sight.The plucky taxidriver brought the lady to the banks of the pond safely.

By then the police and ambulance had arrived. Mr Rahman learned with distress that the unfortunate driver of the van did not survive the accident. The police commended Mr Rahman for his courageous act. When asked by a reporter what had made him do it, the fifty year old man shrugged his shoulders and replied,”It was just a natural human gesture.”
