Jeanette scurried towards the exit of the park. The footsteps behind her were gaining speed. Too afraid to look back, she ran as fast as her legs could carry her. A million anxious thoughts raced through her mind as she wondered if she was going to get out of the park alive.

Just twenty minutes ago, Jeanette was having her weekly night jog at the park behind her apartment. The park was quiet, except for the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. Light from the street lamps produced eerie shadows. Jeanette plodded on, oblivious to a pair of eyes following her every movement.

“Hand me all your valuables. Make a sound and you will die,” a gruff voice hissed when Jeanette stopped to take a break. Startled, she spun around, only to see a masked man wearing a black jacket and a pair of rugged jeans. In his glove-covered hand was a sharp knife, pointed threateningly at Jeanette’s waist. The man’s menacing eyes were glaring evilly at Jeanette, sending shivers down her spine.

With trembling hands, Jeanette handed over the only valuables she had, her wallet and mobile phone. The robber grabbed the loot and tore at the wallet. When he saw that there were only a few two-dollar notes in it, he threw the wallet furiously on the ground.

Jeanette gasped in horror. Without thinking, she sped off and ran for her life! Infuriated, the masked man sprinted after her, holding the knife in his hand and hollering threats at her.

“Help! Somebody! Help me!” Jeanette shrieked in terror. Her heart was palpitating wildly and fear gripped her like the tentacles of an octopus.

Just when Jeanette thought that all hope was gone, she heard a shrill voice shouting, “Police! Help! There’s a robbery!” Stunned, the robber stood rooted to the spot for a second before sprinting off in the opposite direction. When the robber was gone, a young lady appeared out of the shadows with a puppy.

“I was walking my dog when I heard you screaming for help. There is no police. It was a trick!” she whispered in Jeanette’s ears. Tears of relief welled up in Jeanette’s eyes. She hugged the young lady tightly and cried, “Thank you! You saved my life!”

The young lady and Jeanette left the park immediately and made a police report. Unfortunately, the man was never caught. To this day, Jeanette still shudders whenever she recalls this incident. She was thankful that she managed to get out of this dangerous situation unharmed!
