A Day In the Life of a Kindergarten Teacher

Mrs Chan woke up to the shrill alarm of her clock. She had a quick shower, ate breakfast with her husband and daughter and left hurriedly to catch the bus. As she was travelling on the bus, she wondered what kind of day awaited her at the kindergarten she had been working in for the past ten years.

Once the children had sung the National Anthem, Mrs Chan spent the next fifteen minutes exercising with the children while music was being played. Her little students’ exercising never failed to make Mrs Chan smile. For she loved the cute way in which they moved. As she began her morning English lessons, one child started wailing, demanding to see her mother. “Oh no! Not again!” thought Mrs Chan. This was the fourth day in a row that little Lisa was crying. Mrs Chan continued the lesson with Lisa on her hips!

Barely five minutes had passed since Mrs Chan had begun to teach when Michael got up from the floor and shyly asked if he could go to the bathroom. Mrs Chan briefly nodded and resumed lessons. After that, the children settled down and it was smooth sailing until break time. Some of the children opened their lunch boxes and were feasting on cornflakes, sandwiches, biscuits, cakes and even chicken nuggets. Darren was swinging too high on the swing. Mrs Chan and two other teachers kept reminding him to slow down. But naughty Darren would not listen. He kept swinging higher and higher until, he lost his balance on the swing and fell down with a thud, hitting his head. Darren let out a loud wail. Mrs Chan was horrified when she saw blood oozing from his head. She quickly administered first aid to him and called his mother. Fortunately, it was only a minor graze.

Darren’s mother was upset about her son’s injury and scolded Mrs Chan for being careless. Though the other teachers tried to explain it was Darren’s mistake, she would not listen. Once she had left, Mrs Chan began teaching mathematics to the children. She was no bothered much about the incident. She considered it as part and parcel of her job.

Towards the last hour, Mrs Chan and her colleagues started rehearsing the children for a Hawaiian dance. The teachers were planning to put up a show for Chinese New Year and so had been training the children for the past two weeks. But as the music played on, the teachers looked frustrated for the children seemed to have forgotten their dance steps over the weekend. Mrs Chan had to teach the children all over again.

Soon, it was time to go home and as the last child said his goodbye and left, Mrs Chan looked fondly at their little retreating backs. She loved her students dearly and looked forward to teaching them again.
