A Dishonest Act

It was a bright Friday morning. The time was just after eleven. A little boy, Richard, was outside the zoo. He was in a pensive mood. He could not afford the expensive admission ticket. He was too eager to see the various kinds of animals and observe their daily lives. He had read so much about the giraffes, panthers, leopards, polar bears, chimpanzees, poisonous snakes and lions. He was curious to find out more about the eating habits, their living habitats and their sounds and movements. He wished to see them at first hand-alive, full of life, and good poise. He was determined to get into the zoo at all costs. He would not give this fascinating world of animals amiss.

Seeing a big crowd of visitors, both holidaymakers and foreigners, queuing at the entrance, an idea struck him. He could seize the opportunity to sneak into the zoo without being detected. He then mingled with the crowd at the gate. As the crowd became unruly, he jostled them and managed to sneak past a zoo officer. He jumped for joy as he raced to an enclosure where deer were kept. However, his joy was short-lived. Someone tapped his shoulder. He turned round and was shocked to see a zoo officer, Mr. Lim. Mr. Lim demanded to see his admission ticket. Richard was taken aback and stammered, “I..........have......have.....lost it.” Mr. Lim took him back to the office. Later Richard confessed that he had entered the zoo without an admission ticket. He pleaded with the zoo officer to let him off as he regretted his act. However, the police were called and Richard was taken to the police station for questioning.
