A housewife, Doreen, was crossing an overhead bridge one fine morning. She had just finished her marketing and her basket was laden with poultry, leaft vegetables, prawns and meat. Feeling weary, she dropped her purse unknowingly. It contained her bunch of keys, her identity card, coins, a hundred-dollar banknote and a bottle of ointment. She trudged wearily with her heavy basket and soon reached the other end of the bridge. She then descended a flight of steps. At this time, a little boy, James, was walking across the bridge when he spotted a purse on the ground. His eyes gleamed with greed. As many pedestrians, mostly office workers, were behind him, he kicked the purse to an obscure corner of the bridge. He feared that it might fall on someone’s hands. He wanted to keep it for himself. He would return later to retrieve it secretly. No one would suspect him to be a wrongdoer. He thought that it was full of money. With the money, he could lay hands on anything that he yearned for. He came from a poor family and could not afford even a hamburger. He loved to enjoy the good things in life.
At this juncture, the pedestrians crossing the bridge were oblivious to what was going on. They were in a hurry to go to work. James soon descended a flight of steps and reached the pavement. He loitered in the vicinity for some time. Seeing that the overhead bridge was deserted, he acted fast. The coast was clear. He climbed up the bridge and went to retrieve the purse. It was lying at an obscure corner with its contents still intact. James opened it and found a lot of money in it. He did not return the money to its rightful owner.
James was a dishonest boy, loathed by all.
