“Officer Koh, there’s news from the police that a drug trafficker will be coming from Bangkok on the 3p.m. SIA flight. Be on your guard!”
“Yes, sir!” I said as I saluted to my senior officer. I took the reins and ordered some of my men to mingle with the passengers the moment they left the plane at 3p.m., and others to station themselves at all the exits and entrances of the airport”Put on your radio-earphones,” I reminded them. Then, we went off to do our assigned work. I looked at my watch. It was about 2.55 p.m., another five minutes to go....
At about 3 o’clock, passengers began to flock into the Immigration and Customs Checkpoint. My men began to slip into the crowd and mingle with them, brushing some of those who looked suspicious. Suddenly, I saw a woman who had a face like a man, walking to the checkpoint, looking nervous. She tapped her shoes impatiently while waiting for the customs officer to finish checking her handbag. She fingered her necklace and bracelet now and then. Sometimes, she also smiled to herself nervously. She kept looking around her and avoided direct eye contact with anyone, especially the customs officer. “Hmm, she fits the description of a drug-trafficker,” I said to myself. My sixth sense told me that she was a drug-trafficker and the drugs might be hidden inside the large beads of her necklace and bracelet. I approached her at once, produced my identity and said,”I suspect you of peddling drugs. Please come with me to my office”
The woman panicked and ran off. My men and I gave chase. “Get Roger out!” I shouted to officer Wong who was in charge of a narcotic dog. Roger was brought and ordered to chase the drug-trafficker. The woman tried to run to the exit, but as Roger was right behind her, he pounced on her and pinned her down to the ground.
The woman’s wig had fallen off. He was a male just as I expected! He was lying on the floor, struggling with Roger when I caught up with them. Eventually I had him apprehended and he was taken to the police station at once.
The next day, the newspaper headlines read,’Drug- Trafficker nabbed”. Officer Wong was so proud of Roger that he bought a T-bone steak for him. I was quite pleased with myself too. Although the criminal tried to sail under false colours, he was arrested. He, of course, came to a sad end.
With more than fifteen grams of heroin found hidden in the necklace and bracelet, he would have to face the death sentence.
