It was a splendid morning when Joseph took his puppy,Mandy, to a river bank behind his garage to fish.
Joseph whistled merrily while Mandy tugged impatiently at the leash, wondering in its mind why on earth, Joseph did not sniff at things like she did. They reached their destination after a few minutes of strolling.
Joseph put his bag under a big Laurel tree and commanded Mandy to guard his belonging. Mandy barked sharply in reply as if saying, “Yes, sir!” Joseph got out his homemade fishing rod made of nylon string and swung the rod with its tasty bait of earthworm into the water. Soon, he had quite a nice catch of carps. He also got some frog spawn.
Just as he was about to drop the line into the water again, he lost his balance and slipped into the icy cold water. He screamed and bawled at the top of his lungs as the water level rose above him. He struggled hard in the water because he did not know how to swim at all.
Meanwhile, Mandy stood petrified at the bank. Suddenly, her dog’s instinct told her that she must get help from someone.
As quick as lightning, she sprang back to the stony path which she took just half an hour ago and barked at a passer-by.The passer-by sensed that something was wrong and followed the little puppy to the bank.
Mandy raced against the howling wind. Her brown, clean, silky coat revealed the hours of grooming she had in a day.
On seeing a boy struggling in the water, the passer-by, Mr,Chan, immediately swam hard to overcome the rushing water. With much difficulty, he managed to reach the boy and grab him by his collar.
“Th ..... Thank you!” said Joseph weakly as he was still experiencing the fifteen terrible minutes he had had. “It’s nothing,” replied Mr Chan. “You’ve got to thank that cute puppy of yours! She was the one who saved you.” He pointed at a wet figure who was shaking herself of the water she got when she also tried to save Joseph.
Mandy looked dignified and extremely proud of herself She cast a sympathetic glance at her master who looked like a duck left out in a heavy downpour. When they got home, Joseph’s mother was so pleased with Mandy that she gave Joseph twenty dollars to buy Mandy some food and toys from a nearby pet shop.
