A Fire

It was a hot day. I walked slowly, licking an ice-cream.Suddenly, I heard the blare of a fire engine. The bright red vchicle stopped just metres away from where I stood. As I watched,I saw thick, black smoke snaking out of the fifth floor window of an old residential building.

When I neared the area, a cordon was already in place. A small crowd of people had already formed a ring around the cordoned area. Firemen and policemen were running all about the place. Ladders were put in place and cranes were lifting firemen into the air.

Suddenly, the sound of a lady’s high pitched wailing was heard. I saw the lady standing at a fifth floor balcony waving her chubby arms about. Her hair was in disarray with colourful curlers hanging limply about her head. “Help! Someone help me!” she screeched. A barred container was lifted up to rescue her. However, the lady appeared terrified of stepping into it.After a bit of a hullabaloo, a fireman was sent up in the container. Tongues of fire had begun to lick both the sixth and fourth floors by that time. The distraught lady was promptly rescued.

After almost two hours, the fire was extinguished. No one knew what caused the fire. I heard some people in the crowd conversing. The word “sabotage” was repeated a few times. As I made my way home, I thought the heat of the day might be a likely cause.
