It was one of those warm, sun-blazing school holidays.Mary had just awoken. It was only after she padded to the kitchen, she realized that no one was at home. It was a weekday and her parents had gone to work.
Feeling hungry, she took out two slices of bread and slotted them into the toaster. Then, she went back to her bedroom for some more rest. But, her eyelids felt heavier and heavier, and she dozed off again, forgetting totally that she had left the toaster on.
After about half an hour, she woke up suddenly as the smell of smoke rushed into her nostrils. It was then that she remembered she had left some bread in the toaster. She jumped out of bed immediately and scrambled out of her bedroom. Nevertheless, it was too late.
Fire had spread beyond the walls of the kitchen. Terrorstricken, she screamed in panic. Her legs went soft. As soon as she recovered from her fright, she rushed into her room and bolted the door. Then, she rolled up a piece of carpet and stuffed it in the gap between the door and the floor.
Mary tried to scream as loudly as she could. Fortunately, her neighbours heard her terrified cries. One of them called the police, the fire brigade and her parents. They also tried to calm Mary down by telling her that her parents were on their way home.
Shortly after, the police and the fire brigade arrived. As Mary lived on the third floor, the fire fighters had to use a ladder to reach the burning house. At the same time, another group of the fire-fighters had hacked the main door to get into the house immediately. They fought the fire bravely. In a few minutes, the fire was under control.
Luckily, Mary was not injured, but, she could barely manage to utter a word of thanks to the fire fighters and her neighbours.
After the scary incident, Mary has resolved never to leave any electrical appliances unattended ever again.
