A Fire On Board A Train

It was nearly four p.m. when a passenger, Mr. Lim, lit a cigarette with a match. He felt bored and restless in the foul-smelling carriage on a warm afternoon as the train wound its way across the Malaysian countryside. The train was bound for picturesque Panang. The carriage was packed with commuters. They came from all walks of life. They comprised traders, hawkers, housewives, students and clerks. At this juncture, the peace was shattered by a teenaged boy’s shout. “Look! The buffalo is helping the farmer to plough the field! I’ve never seen such a sight before, not in my urban hometown!”

Meanwhile, there was a strong smell of inflammable liquid. Many passengers took little notice of it. Mr. Lim simply disregarded it. It was a small patch of petrol. No one took the pains of informing the conductor about this potential hazard. When Mr. Lim had finished smoking the cigarette, he threw the lighted butt to it unknowingly. All of a sudden, a small fire broke out. Screams and shouts filled the air as everyone stampeded in a frantic attempt to flee the scene. The blaze soon spread far and wide. The seven carriages of this passenger train were engulfed in flames. Forty passengers perished in the blaze.
