I sat alone on a bench in the park, staring at the ground. Ever since I had transferred to a new school, I had found it difficult to make friends. During recess, I often sat by myself while watching other children laugh and play together.
One Saturday morning, my mother brought me to the park for some fresh air. While she was jogging, I sat quietly on a bench, feeling lonely. Suddenly, I noticed an elderly woman struggling to carry a heavy basket filled with fruits.
Without hesitation, I rushed over to help her. “Thank you, dear,” she said warmly. Her name was Mrs Tan, and she lived nearby. She invited me to sit with her while she rested.
To my surprise, we chatted happily for almost an hour. She told me fascinating stories about her childhood and shared valuable advice about making friends. Her kindness made me feel comfortable, and I soon forgot my shyness.
Over the next few weeks, I visited the park regularly. Mrs Tan and I would talk, play simple games and enjoy snacks together. Although there was a huge age difference between us, we became good friends.
This friendship was unexpected because I never imagined that an elderly stranger could become one of my closest friends. Through Mrs Tan, I learnt that friendship is not determined by age but by kindness, understanding and trust. It was a friendship that changed my life and filled my lonely days with joy.
