A Forest Fire

It was nightfall. A weary hunter, Louis, was resting on a hammock in a jungle clearing. His rifle lay beside him. He was wary of wild animals lurking in the dense undergrowth. The night was warm and he was perspiring profusely. He quenched his thirst at short intervals. His water container was slung across his shoulder. Unknown to Louis, the jungle was in the midst of a long drought. Rain had not fallen for the past two months. The vegetation was parched.

All of a sudden, a fire erupted and it spread like bushfire. The silent night was interrupted by the crackle of the fire. Animals stampeded to get out of harm’s way. The scene was noisy and dusty. Soon Louis smelt smoke and was awakened by a flurry of wings and a bird flew out. He sensed something amiss. At this juncture, the fire fanned by a strong wind, was almost at his resting-place. Seeing the leaping flames at a distance, Louis grabbed his rifle and fled for his life. He ran and ran as fear gripped him. Soon he reached a deep river. He heaved a sigh of relief as he dived into it. He was safe at last. As he looked back, the sky was lit up by the leaping flames of the fire. As fire swept across the forest, it destroyed everything in its path. Trees were razed to the ground and animals, birds and insects perished.
