A Friendly Lesson Learnt

“Now which pendant shall I choose?” I had been in the shop for nearly half an hour and had a hard time deciding the final choice. It had to be a good choice, as I would be presenting it to my Granny who would be celebrating her 80th birthday in New Crown Hotel that evening. For a moment, I regretted not having successfully persuaded Jvanna, my elder sister to accompany me. She had already bought her gift for Granny and had wanted to spend the whole afternoon “preparing” herself for the dinner. Her vanity had not subsided a bit all these years.

I took a last look at the pendants displayed and chose one with a small diamond stud embedded in it.It looked elegant and I knew Granny would love it. After paying for it, I proceeded on to the nearby shops to buy a card for Granny. Not wanting to settle for anything inferior in design and wording, I went from one shop to another. It was only half an hour later that I saw a card I liked,

I must have under estimated the time given for my shopping. By the time I wrapped the gift and prepared the card, it was already half past six. The dinner would commence in half an hour’s time! I hailed a taxi at the main road and was soon on my way to New Crown Hotel, Leaning back to relax a little after four hours of continuous walking, I closed my eyes for about five minutes.

As I looked out of the window, I was puzzled to see unfamiliar roads before me.”Where are we going?”I uttered in surprise. “To New Cone Hotel,” replied the driver. Only then did I realise that he had made a mistake. Could it be that I was not clear in stating my destination earlier? Realising his mistake, he apologised and made a turn in the right direction.

As a result of that mistake, I reached the hotel lobby at seven thirty. Would my grandparents, parents and other relatives understand me? Would I receive a sound scolding and be “condemned” by some of the relatives? My mind was full of such thoughts as I walked into the ballroom. I was fearful of being misunderstood!

Everyone was standing near the birthday cake when I entered the room. My Granny had insisted that they wait for me before she cut the cake. My parent’s worried looks broke into sighs of relief when they saw me. Accustomed to entertaining morbid thoughts, they were worried that I had perhaps met with an accident.My other relatives wondered if I had lost my way while Jvanna chided me for keeping everyone waiting. I was most embarrassed and after apologising to them, I explained what had happened. Fortunately, everyone was in a cheerful mood and was merciful towards me.Without wasting any more time, we proceeded to sing Granny her birthday song and clapped as she cut the cake.

From that incident, I learnt my mistake of getting a gift at the eleventh hour and for not giving myself more time to travel from one place to another. I was especially thankful that my Granny and the others were forgiving towards me. I was able to enjoy a splendid evening which was not in any way marred by my late arrival.
