“Come on, Emma! The race is about to start!” I called out to my best friend as we lined up for the annual school cross-country race.

Emma and I had trained together for weeks. We dreamed of winning medals and making our class proud. When the whistle blew, we sprinted forward. The cool breeze brushed against my face as I focused on the winding route ahead.

Halfway through the race, I heard a cry behind me. I turned and saw Emma lying on the ground. She had tripped over a tree root and twisted her ankle. Tears welled up in her eyes as she struggled to stand.

For a moment, I hesitated. If I stopped to help her, I would lose my chance of winning a medal. However, Emma had always been there for me whenever I needed help. Friendship was more important than any prize.

Without another thought, I ran back and helped her up. Supporting her with my shoulder, I slowly guided her towards the finishing area. Several teachers rushed over and brought her to the first-aid station.

A few weeks later, during the school assembly, something unexpected happened. The principal called my name and Emma’s name onto the stage. We were awarded the Medal of Courage and Friendship for showing kindness and teamwork.

As I stood beside my smiling friend, I realised that true friendship is not measured by trophies or medals. It is proven when we stand by one another during difficult times.
