A Frightful Encounter

It happened when I went jogging in Bishan Park.As was my habit I took my dog, Trigger along. She bounded along happily beside me and enjoyed the jog as much as I. A mongrel came out of nowhere and attacked her. This had never happened before, even though we have had mongrels bark at us.
Being a lady, my dog was no fighter and suffered the worse of it. Before I could do anything, Trigger was bitten in the neck area. I saved her from too much injury though, I recovered enough to kick the mongrel and send it reeling. Then I went to attend to Trigger. She was hurt quite badly and whined piteously. I did not know what to do. Then an elderly gentleman came up to me and advised me to take her to the vet as quickly as possible. He said that he suspected that the mongrel was probably a mad dog.
I went to call my father. My knight in shining armour,as always, he arrived in exactly 7 minutes and took charge of the situation. Within minutes we were at the vet’s. He examined her and I was worried by the grim look on his face. Then he took Dad aside and whispered something to him.
Dad came over and put his arms on my shoulders.I expected the worst. The vet had said that the dog that had bitten Trigger was probably rabid. If so, my dog was in for a hard time and the chances of her surviving-less than 10 percent. He suggested that we let him put her to sleep.
I just went to my dog, carried her, and started to walk out. Dad restrained me, but the look in my eyes must have told him that I intended to fight the whole world — even him if necessary, to save my dog. He told the vet that we would take our chances. We waited anxiously while the vet treated Trigger.
Next morning I called the relevant authorities and told them about the mongrel and they promised to catch and destroy it. Then I attended to my dog. I realised that she may not live long, so I gave her as much love as I could. Mum left me alone and did not bug me to help with the housework. I took Trigger to the vet everyday.
All I can say is that the vet soon became more hopeful. I suppose some of my determination must have rubbed off on him. One week later, he gave a broad smile to indicate that my dog was better and on the road to recovery. I jumped for joy.
It took one month for poor Trigger to be herself again. I thought back about my bold decision to fight for her. I could not help a cold feeling in my heart when I thought of the possibility of my dog contracting rabies and becoming a mad dog.
