The wind was howling that night.
Bang!” Amira’s bedroom window slammed hard against the sill. Amira almost jumped out of her skin in fear. She was all alone at home that night as her parents were at a friend’s house. They would only be back at midnight.
“Whoosh!” Out of the corner of her eye, Amira thought that she saw a white figure move quickly past the entrance to her room. She could feel the hairs on the back of her neck standing at attention.
“Should I go out and take a look?” Amira asked herself. After struggling with her fears, she finally decided that this was her house and she should pluck up her courage to defend it. After all, what if it was a burglar?
Amira grabbed her baseball bat and gingerly made her way into the hallway. In the dim moonlight, she could vaguely make out something white at the end of the hall. Gripping the bat even more tightly, she inched closer and closer to the white figure. Again, a strong wind blew through the house. Amira gasped as the white figure made its way towards her. It seemed to accelerate its motion and finally it showed its greediness to engulf her.
“Aaargh!” Amira screamed in fear. Paralyzed by fear her legs got rooted to the floor. She stood poised, holding the bat in mid-air, screaming her head off with her eyes shut tight.
“Huh?!” She opened her eyes and found her cat licking her face. A white curtain covered the both of them. It suddenly dawned on her that a curtain must have come loose, blown oft by the strong wind. Brownie, her tabby cat, must have gotten under the curtain somehow and was responsible for the frightfu experience she had found herself in just a few minutes ago.
Amira laughed in relief. “Thank goodness I didn’t hit the figure with the bat.” She then made a silent reminder to herself not to read too many scary ghost stories. Brownie just looked at her curiously and scooted off down the hall, leaving Amira sti lying under the white curtain.
