A Ghostly Trick

It was past midnight. I took a shortcut across the field to get home quickly. As I was walking, I heard footsteps behind me I was scared out of my wits. “Could they be kidnappers, thieves,or..... ghosts?” I quickened my steps. The footsteps increased speed too.

At this time, I almost broke into a run. I hid behind a pillar at the void deck of a block. The footsteps stopped, then continued, getting more and more faint. I sighed in relief. I looked around and found that I was further away from home. As I had just recently moved into this neighbourhood, I was not familiar with the place. I was lost! I looked around for a public phone.

Thank goodness! There was one. It was a card-phone. I didn’t bring my phone-card along. I felt like crying. Suddenly, an idea popped into my mind. I could go home by taxi! I waited and waited. Finally, a taxi appeared. I told him my destination and off he went. Fortunately, I brought some money along.

As I entered my house, I heard the phone ring. I hurriedly answered it, afraid that the ringing tone would disturb my parents.

“Hello?” a familiar voice said.

“Who is this?” I asked.

“Sharon here. Hey! Did you drop a handkerchief at Suzie’s house?” Sharon asked. I searched my pockets but couldn’t find my handkerchief.

I said “Yes.”

“Oh! So it is yours. By the way, did you hear footsteps on your way home?” Sharon asked.

“Well, yes! How do you know that?” I asked in suspicion”Oh, I’m not supposed to tell you, but I think I’d better. It was Audrey and I playing a trick on you. At the party, you said you didn’t believe in ghosts, so we intended to try you out.” She giggled.

I recalled and remembered I did say that when we were discussing that topic during the party.

“’l get you back for this,” I said and hung up the phone.However, I was relieved that it was actually not a ghost.
