A helpful neighbour

A HELPFUL NEIGHBOUR

None of us know her name but all of us call her Auntie and refer to her as the ‘Auntie with the big dog’ As suggested by the title, this is because she has a really big dog, albeit a very tame one. Every evening we see her taking the dog for a walk, or more accurately the dog taking her for a walk. From what everyone sees, the dog pulls where it wants to go and she just follows, grumbling all the way.

‘Auntie with the big dog’ is the most helpful neighbour in the block. She talks to everyone and invites herself to people’s homes. She is typical of the old kampong peighbour that we hear our parents talking about at length when they talk about the good old days. Well, Auntie likes to check in on the sick and the old and get to know everyone. Though she is against the HDB spirit of ‘leave your-neighbours-alone-and-mind-your-own-business’ Auntie is welcome everywhere she goes. This is because she is a helpful old soul. Let someone be sick and she will be the first to appear with her home made remedies. If those do not work, she will recommend a doctor who is an expert. Let someone die and she will be at the wake day and night until the funeral is over. She will be where she is wanted the most; consoling the bereaved. As she knows most of the rituals she will give advice and will do things like manning the telephone and even running about to purchase necessary things. Everyone is fascinated with her boundless energy.

Auntie is most helpful when it comes to looking after expectant mothers and mothers after delivery. Since she herself had given birth to seven children she claims herself to be an expert in such matters and indeed, from what she has been doing, it seems that she is. She knows what food expectant others should eat and what they should eat after they have delivered and so on. She has such a reputation that all of us go by her advice rather than consult doctors. The culmination of her skill came about when a young mother and her husband did not take her advice. “Take her to the hospital, she will deliver tonight,” she had said. The husband wanted to wait until morning. Then in the middle of the night he was knocking on Auntie’s door. She rushed and attended to the woman while the man called the ambulance. The baby arrived safely before the ambulance did. Like a trained midwife, Auntie knew just what to do. It is typical of her that the words, “I told you!” did not come from her lips.
