A Kind Gesture

Christmas was fast approaching. A group of policemen pooled their money and bought tins of crispy biscuits, toothbrushes, toothpaste,blankets, towels, sandals, combs, cakes, soap, canned food and tins of condensed milk

The next day, they paid a visit to an Old Folks’ Home in the suburbs where frail elderly man and women took up lodging. As they entered the Home, they were greeted warmly by the old folks. The visitors shook hands and exchange greetings with the smiling old folks. A.few minutes later, the policemen took turns to pass round their gifts to each of the old folks. The old folks thanked them for their generosity and many were moved to tears. The presence of the visitors really brought cheers to them; they thought that the outside world had forgotten them;they were leading a life of desolation; their future looked bleak as they felt that life was meaningless.

The policemen mingled with them and praised them for their past contributions to society and the nation. A majority of them were former teachers while the rest comprised former clerks. The visitors did their utmost to cheer them up and make them forget that they were the less fortunate ones.

After two hours or so, the visitors entertained the old folks with games, songs and pop music. One of the policemen, Osman, turned singer and was accompanied by a colleague who played a guitar. The tune was a sentimental one, and, to the audience, it brought back fond memories of the sixties. The audience cheered and applauded happily. It was soon followed by another four sentimental hits. Many old folks took to the floor, much to the cheers of the audience.
