A Loss

The old man pulled his threadbare sweater closer to his shivering body. The rain had been unending that day. The old man was on his way to visit a dear friend.

He trudged along a muddy footpath. He pictured his friend Amit Khan as a grey-headed bespectacled man with a cheeky grin on his face. The old man chuckled to himself. They had had good years together – going to school, playing soccer and washing cars to earn some pocket money. They only parted ways when the old man had to leave the country.

It had been almost twenty years then. As the old friend walked along, Amir Khan’s house came into sight. Strangely, there was a crowd of people at the front of the house. Nearing the crowd, the old man observed the crowd was a solemn one. The men had ‘songkoks’ and caps on while the ladies all wore scarve. The man hurried forward. Reaching the house, he saw acloth-draped coffin in the middle of the living room. An elderly lady sobbed quietly beside it She was Amir Khan’s wife. She looked up at her dead husband’s old friend and mournfully shook her head.

The old man knew he had just lost a good friend.
