A Man’s Nap In Public Gave Rise To Public Concern

One fine afternoon, a weather-beaten labourer, Ah Beng, was exhausted after two days of hard work. As he sat on the pavement, he stretched his limbs and was yawning repeatedly. He had been loading food supplies onto a London bound ocean-going liner for the past two days. With a cool breeze blowing towards him, he felt drowsy. Soon he fell asleep unknowingly. His sight looked pitiful. He was unshaven, looked haggard and wore soiled clothes.

As he lay asleep on the cool pavement, it caused a stir among office workers, executives and pedestrians who passed by. Many people were milling around him. They thought he must have passed out or, worse, suffered a heart attack. Some female office employees shunned his sight as they took fright at the lifeless man. Someone summoned an ambulance. A kind passerby stepped out and felt Ah Beng’s forehead and his body. They were not cold. There was sigh of life in him. He spoke to the crowd. “He’s not dead.” Just then, the siren of a fast approaching ambulance was heard. Everyone made way for the ambulance attendants and the nurse to examine Ah Beng. At this juncture, he woke up, sending everyone screaming and fleeing for dear life. He looked up blearily at the fleeing crowd and scratched his head. He was wondering what could have caused it. He was not aware that his nap in a public place gave rise to public concern. They could have mistaken him for a dead person.

As Ah Beng staggered towards the startled ambulance attendants and nurse, some women started screaming, “Oh, dear! He has come back from the dead! It’s horrifying!” The ambulance left the scene, leaving Ah Beng bewildered.
