I sensed there was trouble brewing long before the rest of the family members did. I saw my sister, Jenny, not in her usual jovial mood at our mother’s birthday dinner at Ah Huat Seafood Paradise. She seemed to be very formal with Richard, her husband. I could see that their relationship was strained. I wondered why and asked my sister if anything was wrong. She looked at me blankly and turned away. Having known her all my life, I knew that she was avoiding something. I became worried and spoke to Grandpa about it. He listened intently and then thanked me and told me that he too suspected something. He told me to leave it to him. I was relieved.
That Saturday there was a sudden lunch party and all the family members were present. After one of Mother’s fabulous meals, the family lingered on at the dining table. Everyone shifted uncomfortably and talked about silly things like the weather and traffic jams along the expressway. Then Grandpa looked directly at Jenny and asked her point blank what was wrong between her and Richard, A hush fell over the room as Jenny denied anything was wrong defiantly, though the tears forming in her eyes showed that something serious was amiss.Grandpa then looked at Richard.
Richard was cool. He looked at Jenny and said nothing. Suddenly Jenny let forth a tirade of accusations against her husband. She started saying that Richard was living in a world of his own called the “army”. He was married to his job and she was the poor second wife who had to look after herself. She was fed up of being plone and felt unloved and so on and on. Then Richard raised his voice and defended himself saying that he had a career to build and that she had known about his working hours long before they were married. I was relieved that the quarrel was not so serious. Grandpa held up his hand for silence. Then he took a markel and went to the whiteboard he had carefully placed earlier and dragged it into the dining room. Then he proceeded to write down what Jenny and Richard had said. Upon being written down, the problem looked small indeed. Then he said suddenly, “This problem has no solution, obviously both of you do not love each other anymore. I recommend divorce”. Everyone was stunned. Father opened his mouth to say something, but his wife closed his mouth with her hand. He shut up.Everyone just stared. Than Richard stammered,”That’s n-n-not t-t-true, I love Jenny”, Jenny started to cry and her husband put his arm around her. Then we all clapped. Then I heard, a waltz on the hi-fi; my brother’s handiwork.
“Dance!” shouted everyone. Bashfully, Richard led his wife round the room in a waltz. This was their favourite dance and I have never seen anyone doing it quite like they did. All of us clapped, and the tension in the air seemed to have disappeared. Then Mother stepped forward with a little envelope. Jenny opened it and squealed with delight. Mother had booked a room for the night in a hotel for Jenny and Richard. “Now get out, both of you”, said Grandpa. All of us laughed as the couple ran towards their car.
