A Misadventure

The holidays were coming to an end. Annie felt restless. She wanted to do something adventurous. Earlier in the day, her father had advised her to read her new school textbooks for the next year. Annie felt reluctant to do so.

Instead, she called her younger brother. Then, she wheeled put an old, unused bicycle from the backyard. Together, the siblings pushed the bicycle up the steep slope of a winding road.”I am going to have the ride of my life,” boasted Annie to Frank, as they stood at the top of the slope. From where they stood, they could see that the end of the steep slope turned sharply into a bend.

“Are you sure about this?” asked Frank, feeling uneasy. “It is very steep,” he added. But Annie was adamant. She sat herself on the seat and with her feet on the pedals, she made the move. The speed was frightening. Halfway down the slope, the front wheel began to wobble.

“...let go the brakes!... let go... the brakes!” shouted Frank who was watching his sister in bewilderment. Annie was already in panic. Thinking she should not step on the brakes, she wondered what could be wrong. Before a few seconds had passed, both the rider and bicycle laid in a twisted heap on the hard gravel.

“Did you step on the brakes?”’ panted Frank as he helped his injured sister up. “I thought you said to let it go!” wailed Annie. Just then, a big car came speeding around the bend. The two hurriedly moved the wreckage to the side of the road. A more terrible misadventure had been avoided.

As she limped silently home, Annie knew that she should have listened to her father.
