A Nasty Shock

It was a rainy Monday night. The streets were wet and deserted. A lone dog’s howling shattered the peace of the night. A woman, Doris, was watching a video show ‘The Godfather’. The show contained two episodes. Dramatic and tense, it marked the rise and fall of the American Mafia, a notorious organised crime syndicate. She was held in suspense as armed gangsters battled their rival gangs’ members for control of drug peddling and gambling dens. Killings were common. Brutal and savage the gangland slayings were, Doris abhorred it. Soon she dozed off unknowingly. The show was still on and the house was pitch dark.

Soon she was awakened by an intruder who robbed her of $38,600 in valuables and cash. The robber, in his late forties, was armed with a screwdriver. Doris froze and dared not put up a struggle. To show that he meant business, he scratched her face with his weapon, causing a long scar across it. Doris took fright and huddled in a corner. The robber was believed to have entered the room through the sliding glass window. He tied Doris up with a piece of cloth, ransacked the room and escaped with the loot.
