I was not given much choice over what school |wanted to attend after my Primary School Leaving Examination. As in everything else, my parents made the decision. I had been in an all-boys school for six years. The secondary school I was posted to was a mixed school. In a single swoop, I had lost all my friends and they had been replaced by a bunch of snooty “high class” kids and, worse still, girls. I was not happy at all.
I was met at the gate by a group of boys and girls. I learnt that they were from the Reception Committee. They introduced themselves and took care of all the administration, like telling me where my classroom was, who was my teacher, what time recess was, where the various other facilities were and so on. I was impressed. They turned out to be quite a nice lot and I found them sincere in wanting to make my first day in the school a not too difficult one.
One girl seemed to have taken a fancy to me.She described me as “cute”, just like her little brother at home. I must have blushed, for I felt hot in the cheeks. Then I caught sight of some of my former classmates. In spite of all their big talk about going to an all-boys school, they ended up in my school too. The parents had struck again! Anyway, I was relieved and rushed to greet them. There was a wild session of shoulder slapping and handshaking all round. The members of the Reception Committee, seeing that we were so happy, slipped away to attend to other lost birds.
We went into and sat in the classroom. Enter: Mr Kumar. He had a moustache like the handle bar of my brother’s motor cycle. He glared at all of us silently and introduced himself. He made one thing very clear, he lived by discipline and so would we. Anyone who didn’t etc. Etc. Etc. I swallowed and saw a couple of my classmates do the same. Then Mr. Kumar set about arranging the classroom in typical army fashion. The shorties in front and the “how’s-the-weather-up-theres”at the back. I got a seat right in front, with girls on both sides and behind me.
The next day lessons started in earnest. They did not believe in wasting time. I found that Mr. Kumar taught us all the subjects except second language. I was relieved though. Except for his insistence on rigid “sit-up-straight and listen-to-me” discipline, he was all right. He knew his subjects, told dry jokes and even smiled once in awhile. Soon we began to like him.
