A PARK

The are a few parks in Singapore but my favourite is the Macritchie Park. It is a big park and if you include the nature reserve, the biggest in Singapore. What makes it my favourite is that it is around the reservoir and in some places overlooks the water. This gives it an atmosphere of vastness. Mostly because of its size, it is the venue for many cross country runs and outdoor activities.

At the gate of the park is a large area where people gather for activities such as cross country runs and telematches. There is also a large playground for children. There are a few slides and swings where children can be entertained for hours. Then there is a road that leads to the other side of the park. For those who prefer to walk there is a little track which leads to the top of a small hill and a garden. Walking to the top of the hill one comes to a little cafe. Here one can get refreshments in the form of snacks, ice-cream and soft drinks.

Looking down the hill one can see the big stretch of the Macritchie Reservoir. A little closer one sees rows and rows of benches. In the day time these benches are used by everyone to rest and enjoy looking across the water. At night the benches are usually occupied by courting couples whispering sweet nothings and planning their futures together. The park is a beautiful place for photography enthusiasts. There is no end to the number of excellent backgrounds for photographing children and nature.

As one gets down from the hill one sees an elaborate bridge across part of the reservoir. The bridge is named ‘Bridge of Love’ because of the numerous couples who like to stand there and stare at the water. If one walks across the bridge, one should stand in the middle and look about. Big fish can be seen swimming about in the clear water below. Children love to throw bread Crumbs and watch the fish coming up to get them. There are also tortoises and turtles in the water. In one corner is a patch of lotus plants, which are usually with at least one beautiful white or red bloom.

Across the bridge is a small hill. There is a flower clock and surrounding it are many flowering plants. There are also a few benches here but it is more fun to sit on the ground and look at the reservoir. The still water reflects the sunlight and shows that even in Singapore there are places which can show vastness. Beyond this area is the nature reserve, where a fascinating world of tropical jungle unfolds.
