A Promise Unkept

I looked again at the battered remains of the woman who meant so much to me. I hardly recognised her. Her sweet face had been smashed beyond recognition. She had jumped from the apartment, though the open window. I had locked the door as a precaution and had the key in my pocket. I did not know that she had the keys to the window bars.

I had been a fool, I knew that. I had lost her forever, because of a small mistake on my part: I had left her alone when she should never have been left alone. She had promised that she would not take her life. I had extracted the promise from her after half an hour of begging and threatening. I had seen the look of anger and despair in her eyes and I realise now,in hindsight, it was obvious that she had never intended to keep her promise.

Sandy’s husband of three years had betrayed her.Sandy was not just my older sister; she was also my best friend, We had struggled through life together and had come up the hard way. Two girls who were forced to be independent at a young age. Both our parents had died when we were children and we had only each other;until Ralph came into her life. I had not trusted him right from the start. There was something oily about him which made me dislike him right away. When I had spoken my mind to Sandy, she had become angry. She had accused me of jealousy. I had been hurt and moved out of her life.

Last night when she called me suddenly, after discovering all the love letters in his drawer, I knew that she was in anguish. There was little I could do except cry with her and tell her that I was there for her. I had told her that she could divorce him and move in with me. We would start life again together. She had just kept on sobbing and said nothing. Then towards the morning she had calmed down. This was when I had been fooled into thinking that she had taken a grip on herself.

I looked forlornly at the crushed remains of the woman who meant so much to me. I had a fleeting thought of wanting to leave this world and joining her.As I stood there Ralph appeared and the police let him look at her. He stared at her body silently and then walked towards me; his face a mask. I did not even see any remorse. As he came up to me I aimed a punch and with all the might I could muster, let fly at his face.I connected and watched him stagger. I then leapt at him like a tigress to tear his eyes out; and would have if the guardians of the law had not separated us. I then turned and walked away swiftly.
