A Road Accident

I kept looking at my watch. Time seemed to crawl by. At last, the bell rang and I rushed out of the classroom. Bravo! Another day at school was over. My bicycle was parked in the school’s bicycle shed. Some of my classmates also cycled to school and we wheeled out our bicycles together. As we cycled along the main road on our way home, we talked about our new teacher who had taught us for the first day.

The main road which led from the school to my house passed through the town centre. The traffic was usually quite heavy at that time of the day. There were four schools along the road and the students were all dismissed at the same time. The road was almost choked with buses, lorries, cars and others.

The accident was entirely my own fault. My friends and I were cycling three or four abreast. Motorists began to honk at us in annoyance. On hearing their horns, we moved to the side of the road but as soon as the cars had passed, we continued cycling in a group. Then, a motorist horned furiously behind me. Before I could swerve to the side, I felt the bumper of the car hitting my bicycle. There was a screech of brake and the impact sent me flying through the air.

“I fell heavily on the road and then blacked out. I regained consciousness about fifteen minutes later. By that time, a curious crowd had gathered around me. My friends were kneeling beside me, vigorously fanning my face with exercise books. My head was throbbing and a sharp pain shot through my arm when I tried to lift it up.

Someone had sent for an ambulance, and it arrived about ten minutes later. I was gently lifted onto a stretcher and put into the ambulance. My friends informed my parents what had happened to me. On reaching the Emergency ward, I was given in injection and very soon, I fell into a deep sleep.
