It was a hot afternoon in May. Mr Abdul was on his way wome from work. He had taken a half-day leave to help his hidren prepare for their examinations. As he was on his way to the lift, he saw two men at the void-deck in the next block of flats. The two men looked unkempt. Mr Abdul decided to take a further look at them from his flat’s balcony.
When Mr Abdul went into his flat, he headed straight for the balcony. From the balcony, he could see the two men one of the men injecting something into his arm. The other man was sniffing some white substance from a piece of paper. Mr Abdul’s elder son, twelve-year-old Hisham, saw what was going on too.
“I think they are taking drugs, Papa. I think we have to call the Anti-Narcotics people,” Hisham whispered excitedly,
“Yes, I agree with you,” Mr Abdul said grimly. He picked up the receiver and dialled 999.
Within minutes, the entire place was surrounded by police cars, police officers and Anti-Narcotics officers. By this time,a lttle crowd had gathered to watch what was happening. The two men put up a struggle with the police officers.Suddenly, to everyone’s horror a shot was heard. The crowd let out a huge gasp when they saw a police officer kneeling down in pain. He had been shot by one of the men who was running very fast towards a car. Immediately, the police officers gave chase.
Several people from the crowd rushed towards the police oficer who had been shot in the thigh. Mr Abdul and Hisham, who could see everything from their balcony, immediately called an ambulance. Later, Mr Abdul, together with Hisham went to the police station to act as eye-witnesses to the incident. It seemed that one of the drug addicts who was struggling with the police-officer had managed to snatch the officer’s gun and pulled the trigger at the officer. Then, he had escaped with the gun.
Meanwhile, the police had chased the escaped drug addict all the way to Tampines New Town. The drug addict had gone to his mother’s flat and locked himself up in one of the bedrooms. The police and his mother tried to talk him into coming out and surrendering. Unfortunately, he shot himself in the head instead. The police barged into the room but the drug addict was already dead.
When Mr Abdul and Hisham went to work and to school the next day, they had plenty of things to tell their colleagues and schoolmates. Mr Abdul also used the incident to warn his sons about the consequences of taking drugs. So,there were lessons learnt from the tragic and dramatic incident which happened right under their noses.
