It was a hot afternoon in the month of May. Along Balestier Road, there were many workers having their lunch at the various coffeeshops and restaurants. Suddenly, the heat seemed to grow more intense. To the horror of the lunchtime crowd, a fire had broken out in one of the shophouses. The fire was on the second-storey.
Flames were leaping from the window and thick, heavy smoke was engulfing the area. Some people called the Fir.Department on the handphones and others rushed towards the shophouse to see whether they could help out in any way. There were three men struggling down the stairs. Two men were helping an older man down the stairs.
The firemen came within a few minutes and they quickly set about putting out the fire. As the shophouse and the neighbouring ones were all made of wood, the fire spread quickly. Soon the shophouse next door caught fire. By then,a large crowd had gathered around the scene.
Then, to everyone’s horror, they saw a little girl clutching a kitten at one of the windows of the shophouse. The littlé girl was not crying but she looked dazed. The kitten was mewing loudly. A scream was heard among the crowd. A woman rushed forward and cried loudly that the little girl was her daughter. One of the firemen quickly took action. A ladder was put against the wall and the fireman climbed up quickly. He told the little girl not to be afraid and to hold on tightly to the kitten. He grabbed the little girl and rushed down. The crowd heaved a sigh of relief. Within five minutes, the roof of both shophouses caved in.
The fire was soon brought under control. It had been burning for about twenty-five minutes. Unfortunately both shophouses were burnt beyond recognition. Luckily, no one was hurt or killed in the fire. Soon, an investigation was carried out about the cause of the fire. It seemed that there was something wrong with the electrical wirings. They were too old and some of the fuses had caught fire. The guthorities warned the owners of the neighbouring shophouses to change their electrical wirings if they are old because they could be a fire hazard.
However, most of the shophouse occupiers decided to move out of the shophouses in that row soon after the fire,A few months later, the shophouses were demolished and in their place, there is now a row of spanking new shops,
