I looked at the picture of Mr. And Mrs. Yacob and one year old Haslinda smiling happily together. Haslinda may not be smiling if I had not found her an hour later or if not at all.

I still remember the incident very clearly. I was at the bus-stop in front of my block of flats in Hougang. It was only 6:00 a.m. in the morning. I was going to school. My school was in Bukit Timah. I had to catch the 6:10 a.m. bus to reach the school by 7:30 a.m.It was cold and chilly that morning so I wore my grey and red wind-breaker.

There was no one at the bus-stop when I got there.I sat down on the bench to wait for the bus. Suddenly,I heard whimpering noises coming from the bushes behind me. I was afraid but curious and decided to investigate.I pushed back the leaves and saw a box and in it was baby! It was crying. It had only a vest and cloth nappy on. No wonder it was crying. The baby had brown curly hair and a little pin cushion of a nose. The baby’s lips were blue. I quickly unzipped my wind-breaker and gently scooped the baby up and placed her (I discovered that later) in it. Then I held her close to me to provide some warmth. Her whimpering stopped. I rushed back to the flat to tell my mother. My mother was surprised to see me at the door and shocked when she saw the baby.I blurted out my story from the door.

My mother did not stop to speak but dressed herself quickly and rushed out of the flat with me and the baby. “Where are we going, Mum?” I asked anxiously once we were in a taxi.

“To the Police Station, to report about this baby,”she replied, still very excited. The baby started to cry again. Perhaps she had sensed our excitement. At the Police Station, everyone was excited. The police officer who handied the case, Corporal Lim, called the Social Welfare Department to report my find. Corporal Lim also told us that we could go home, as they would look after the baby until the social welfare officer arrived. My mother and I looked at each other. We wanted to make sure that the baby would be well taken care of. Mother told the officer that we would like to wait for the social welfare officer. The police officer nodded his agreement.

The social welfare officer Miss Devi arrived at 10 a.m. By this time mother had changed the baby’s nappy twice. That was when I discovered that she was a girl.We asked Miss Devi to let us know what happened to the girl. She promised us she would. Suddenly, I realised that I had forgotten all about school! I gave a note to Mr. Keng, my teacher, from my mother to explain the reason for my lateness. He raised his eyebrows slightly, but said nothing. My classmates wanted to know al about my adventure. I noticed that even Mr. Keng listened intently when I told them my story.

Haslinda, that’s the name her adoptive parent’s gave her. Her adoptive parents were kind enough to send me a photo of her on her first birthday. I will always treasure that photograph. It will always remind me how a sweet little girl came briefly into my life and left me a lifetime memory.
