It was nearly three o’clock in the morning. An odd-job labourer, Ah Ming, was tipsy and held an empty beer bottle in his hand. His mouth smelt strongly of liquor. He was seen staggering past a famed prawn mee stall of this hawker centre. Many stalls had remained open late into the night to cater to late moviegoers and revellers. The food sold at these stalls ranged from satay to fish porridge. The stalls were packed and the hawkers were having a hectic time. At this juncture, many customers were busily enjoying the delicious prawn mee and took hardly any notice of Ah Ming.
When Ah Ming reached a stall which sold soft drinks and liquor, he wanted to purchase a large bottle of stout. He took out a ten-dollar note from his wallet to make payment for it. However, he was turned away by the stallholder, “Sorry, I cannot oblige your request. Our stall’s liquor licence permits us to sell liquor only up to two a.m.” Ah Ming was taken aback and flew into a rage. He started yelling abuses and obscenities at the female stallholder, Madam Pang. She took fright at such a scene and ran into her stall. Moments later, Ah Ming wreaked vengeance by smashing up the stall. He flung bottled drinks at a display cabinet, glasses and four sets of lighting. The bottles found their targets. The noise was deafening. The ground was littered with broken glasses. Next Ah Ming vented his anger at the refrigerator. He picked up a chair and smashed it with all his might. It was badly damaged. Madam Pang screamed and scrambled off to safety. The police were called in.
A police party arrived and arrested Ah Ming for causing mischiet at the stall. He was later sentenced to six months’ jail.
