A Strange Night Out

It came as a surprise; the invitation to cook out.I had wanted something with a difference, but I got more than I bargained for. The surroundings that the so-called”cook out” took place in was in a cave! My Malaysian cousin and his friends had discovered the cave by accident and they felt that before it was discovered by others, they wanted to spend a day living like cave people. So for his birthday, he decided to organise something different. It certainly was!

The cave itself was dark and gloomy. The little oil lamps that they lit around the cave, during the daytime, cast only a faint light around. We could barely see each other. I looked hopefully at my watch, but was shocked to realise that it was only 2:00 p.m. and that I had to spend the whole day in that drab place. Seeing that there was nothing better to do, I started to explore the place.

Nearby was a stream and in it, a lot of fish. The cavemen waded in to catch fish – and I mean literally, with their hands. The intention was to roast the fish for dinner. They caught nothing; Malaysian fish were smart. Then I went to walk in the jungle around the cave. I felt uncomfortable. The place looked so strange. I missed the majestic block of flats from where I came from. I looked at my cousin and asked him what we were having for dinner. His reply that they had a lot of canned food surprised me. I did not expect him to have that much good sense, I swallowed the sarcastic remark that arose to my lips, about cavemen not eating canned food. I knew that my cousin was weird enough to throw away all the cans and serve fried ferns on the menu.

The day dragged on, until soon it was dinner time,At about 6:00 p.m. it became dark. The cavemen built a fire and took out their guitars. I was bored and went to sleep; in the cave. After a few attempts at singing, the others came in to sleep. I heard a few grumbles of “starvation” and grinned my agreement. Then it happened.

Suddenly we heard a series of screeches coming from within the cave. There was no time for reasoning or arguments. All cavemen, minus their clubs, dashed out. Then we stood and watched as thousands of bats rushed out in a body. It was eerie. No one dared to go into the cave after that. We just sat around, and cursed the bats, the cold, the mosquitoes, the darkness and finally my cousin for being so weird. After what seemed like the longest night in my life, dawn broke. We packed our things and started the long walk back to civilisation.
