A Stranger Calls

One still afternoon, Madam Amina was all alone at home. Suddenly she heard the revving of a motorcycle. It came from the road in front of the verandah. When she went outside to look, she saw a stationery motorcycle. Its rider stood beside it looking at her. Madam Amina was surprised. She was also alarmed. The rider and his motorcycle were all in black. The rider did not remove his helmet which had a black visor.

“Madam,” started the stranger. “Your husband wants you to let me have fifty dollars. I’m in a hurry. Please get the money now,” finished the man. Madam Amina grew anxious. She had to think fast.

“Please wait a while then,” she said. Then the housewife hurried inside and called her neighbour – a police sergeant – who was not on duty that day.

Mr Ong, the sergeant, immediately confronted the stranger. “What’s your name, Sir?” he asked of the man. Without further ado, the main mounted his bicycle and rode away. Mr Ong gave chase on his own motorcycle. The two riders reached a bushy spot. Mysteriously, the rider in black disappeared without a trace behind some bushes. Mr Ong could find him nowhere. Since that day, the stranger was not seen in the neighbourhood anymore.
